Human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and other emerging contaminants in drinking water

Abstract A wide range of chemicals was measured in different types drinking water and urine samples through target non-target screening (NTS) to estimate human exposure. Tap collected from 42 locations Barcelona (August–October/2020, May/2021), tap filtered with domestic activated carbon filters (AC, N = 6) reverse osmosis (RO, 5), commercial bottled ( 10), 39) were included. 35 per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenol A, nonylphenol analyzed using LC – MS/MS GC MS/MS, NTS HRMS. 9 PFAS detected unfiltered first sampling (79% samples, median 30 ng/L), 6 the second (69%, 9.8 5 13% samples. tentatively identified pharmaceuticals other industrial water. removed by RO not AC filters. Findings provide valuable information for exposure science quality monitoring emerging contaminants.
